Seafarers: Key workers on the frontline
Each year on 25 June, we celebrate the Day of the Seafarer. This year we commemorate seafarers as “key workers on the frontline”. With more than 80% of global trade transported by sea, vessels continue to operate in the unprecedented COVID-19 situation. At Höegh Autoliners, we encourage everyone in the maritime community and beyond, to promote the great work, dedication and commitment our colleagues, friends, loved ones and family members are putting in during these challenging times.
Dedication and professionalism during the pandemic
Earlier this year with the COVID-19 spreading to all corners of the globe, safety measures were put in place. This resulted in travel restrictions prohibiting seafarers from shore leave and crew changes. This meant many seafarers had to extent their time at sea, unsure of when they would be able to return home. Being on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, they play an essential role in maintaining the flow of goods worldwide.
Thor Jørgen Guttormsen, CEO Höegh Autoliners shares,
We are extremely thankful to our seafarers who have shown such dedication and professionalism during this difficult time. They have been away from their families and loved ones during this challenging time, however, they continue to keep good spirits. Their work is vital, as they are the ones sailing the vessels, ensuring we continue to operate and deliver on customer requests. Let us recognise seafarers as key workers; without their dedication and support, global trade would not be possible.
True to their commitment
Currently, about 1,000 seafarers call Höegh Autoliners’ vessels their second home. While being strong for their families, our seafarers stay true to their commitment at work and show professionalism despite the challenges.
One Höegh Autoliners Captain explains,
We seafarers must not stop, we must constantly be steadfast, in providing good service to the world. We must work as hard as we can and live life as normal as possible, for our future. We all must do our fair share of responsibility in tackling these unprecedented challenges. These trials will be just all in another day at work as we all stand united as one.
Gratitude to seafarers worldwide
Höegh Autoliners pays tribute to all seafarers, and thanks them for their contribution. It is with their support and dedication not only during the pandemic, but at all times that we are able to operate our vessels and deliver cargo for customers worldwide.
Our shore-based employees in Höegh Autoliners share messages of gratitude and appreciation to their colleagues at sea and all seafarers worldwide in support to the Day of the Seafarers celebration.
